An evening of twisted classics, operatic meta, broken clichés, cinematic post-apocalypse, infernal misfits, up-side-down arias, gender-bending, waterboarding, musical punishment, hampered singing, resonating stage-elements, mechanical contraptions, grinding stage-mechanics, light and smoke. After a traditionally set dinner-scene, we follow Don Giovanni to hell.

Part opera fiction, following Mozart's character as he dives into what turns out to be the underworld of opera, part coma dream, taking place inside the mind of the opera singer after he hit his head against the trap door.

In opera-hell we traverse through 400 years of opera history guided by the opera-devil, Polistophele, comprised by all the historic Mephistopheleses, Plutos and devils in company of all the daemons, damned, evil and otherwise hell-bound characters of the repertoire. We also traverse through the hidden and dark parts of the opera house through video excursions, using images of the off-stage areas as virtual stage-sets.

In opera-hell the damned and evil characters are exposed to contrapasso a.k.a. poetic justice (with greetings to Dante), i.e. punishments based on the crimes they committed in their operas. These punishments are always musical in nature and form both entertainment for the natives as well as auditions and rehearsals for a grand show that the opera-devil is working to set up as he also takes the roles of dictatorial conductor and stage director.

The original music will (mostly) be recognisable, but, twisted through changes in register, style, context and function, guided by the question: How could this music sound and function in hell or in a dream of hell for a human being of today?

Meta-opera en verpletterende klassieke muziek, postapocalyptische cinema en gendertheater, helium en Chinese martelingen, zingende prothesen, lyrische boetedoeningen, muzikale machines, optische illusies, lichteffecten, het spel met akoestiek, rook en een overdosis plezier: dat is wat Simon Steen-Andersen ons belooft als hij zijn eerste opera omschrijft.

De voorstelling begint met de meest traditionele enscenering die men zich kan indenken van ‘Het Diner’, de slotscène van Mozarts opera Don Giovanni. Terwijl Don Giovanni in de onderwereld wordt geslingerd, volgen we de zanger in zijn val waarbij hij door het valluik in de onderbuik van het gebouw belandt. In deze omgekeerde wereld kan hij zich aan een Danteske reis verwachten, vergezeld van angstaanjagende en absurde doden die het repertoire bevolken. Zal hij de weg naar de verlossing vinden?

Simon Steen-Andersen heeft een belangrijk thema opgepakt dat de geschiedenis van de opera vanaf haar ontstaan achtervolgt: de afdaling naar de hel. Als virtuoos op het gebied van collage, deconstructie en transpositie komt hij in een nieuwe creatie tot een versmelting van personages, situaties en muziek uit een breed scala aan werken van het operarepertoire, van Rameau tot Berlioz en Wagner. Esthetische vormen, tijdperken en talen vermengen zich in een spectaculaire duikvlucht die ons naar het binnenste van de meest helse machine brengt: het theater.

Méta-opéra et classique pulvérisé, cinéma post-apocalyptique et théâtre des genres, inhalation d’hélium pur et tortures chinoises, prothèses chantantes, pénitences lyriques, machines musicantes, illusions d’optique, jeux de lumière, jeux d’acoustique et jeux de fumée — en un mot, une comédie :

Le spectacle commence par une mise en scène on ne peut plus traditionnelle du Dîner, la scène finale de l’opéra Don Giovanni de Mozart. Au moment où Don Giovanni est précipité aux enfers, nous suivons le chanteur dans sa chute : à travers la trappe de scène, il est tombé dans les bas-fonds de l’édifice. Et dans ce monde à l’envers, un périple dantesque l’attend en compagnie de la terrifiante autant qu’absurde communauté des défunts et défuntes du répertoire. Y trouvera-t-il le chemin de la rédemption ?

Simon Steen-Andersen s’empare d’un thème majeur qui hante l’histoire de l’opéra depuis ses origines : la descente aux enfers. En virtuose du collage, de la déconstruction et de la transposition, il fond dans une nouvelle création personnages, situations et musiques empruntés à un large corpus d’œuvres du répertoire lyrique, de Rameau à Berlioz ou Wagner. Esthétiques, époques et langues s’entremêlent au fil d’une plongée spectaculaire dans les entrailles de la plus infernale des machines : le théâtre.
